The Fight for Suffrage Temporary Exhibit

The Fight For Suffrage will cover the movement for women to gain the right to vote in a temporary exhibit at the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum at 211 S. Bench Street. The exhibit opens to the public on Friday, Aug. 23 and will be open through 2020. Curator and Director of Outreach and Education Shelby Miller said Galena was a think tank for voting rights decades before the 19th amendment was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society’s Old Blacksmith Shop, in partnership with the Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association (UMBA), will present a special hands-on event and two-day music fest called “The Other Side of the Anvil.” On Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18 2020 on the lawn adjacent to the Stillman Mansion (513 Bouthillier St.), six forging stations—complete with forge, anvil, vise and tools—will be fired up and skilled regional blacksmiths will provide hands-on instruction for visitors.
