IMLS Grant Reinstated

By Tessa Flak

Every town has a story—but few are as rich, nationally significant, and deeply rooted as Galena’s. And now, that story is one step closer to being shared in a powerful new way.

We’re pleased to announce that the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has officially reinstated a $576,000 federal matching grant for the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, following an official appeal and internal review process. This funding will directly support the purchase of professional-grade exhibit cases, safe transportation of historic artifacts, and the creation of a climate-controlled archives room to protect our artifacts.

This is a significant development not just for the museum, but for the community as a whole. As many may remember, this same grant was withdrawn last month due to broad federal policy changes. Its reinstatement comes after a collective effort from our representatives, staff, and community members who voiced the importance of this project.

The grant covers more than 20% of our exhibition phase budget—and it ensures that the next phase of the museum will be designed to professional standards, telling Galena-Jo Daviess County’s story with clarity, depth, and integrity.

Beyond preserving history, this milestone has broader implications. A fully realized museum facility will strengthen the local economy, enhance tourism, and provide new educational opportunities for students across the tri-state area. It’s a long-term investment in Galena’s identity, one that will continue to pay dividends far into the future.

We are incredibly grateful for the support that helped bring this funding back to life. As work continues on the museum, we look forward to sharing more progress and milestones with our community.

Galena’s story deserves to be told well—and thanks to this major step forward and your continued support, it will be.
