On November 3rd, the Museum took an important step in preserving our nation’s history by transporting three treasured artifacts to the Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The items—a charcoal portrait of Congressman Elihu B. Washburne, Washburne’s personal trunk, and a Civil War flag from the 45th Illinois Infantry (Washburne’s own “Lead Miners” unit)—will undergo expert evaluation and receive a comprehensive conservation plan and cost estimate in the coming weeks.
These artifacts are not just pieces of Galena’s local history—they are national treasures that connect us to some of the most pivotal moments and figures in American history. Elihu Washburne, a close ally of President Abraham Lincoln and General (later President) Ulysses S. Grant, played a critical role in both state and national politics during the Civil War era. His influence, leadership, and friendship with Grant helped shape the course of the Union’s success and the rebuilding of the nation.

Equally significant is the 45th Illinois Infantry flag, flown after the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. This flag represents the bravery and sacrifice of the Illinois soldiers who fought for the preservation of the Union. Its preservation ensures that future generations can stand before it and connect tangibly with the courage and conviction that defined our country’s struggle for unity and freedom.
Conserving these pieces now is especially vital as the Museum prepares for its transition into a new facility, coming summer 2026. Before these artifacts can be safely displayed in their new home, they must be stabilized and professionally conserved to prevent further deterioration. Conservation not only restores their appearance but also safeguards their physical and historical integrity for decades to come.
We are deeply grateful to the Galena Belles – Questers for securing a grant that covers half the conservation cost of the Washburne portrait. Additional grant funding is in progress for Washburne’s trunk, but we still need community support to meet the remaining costs for these projects. Every contribution—large or small—helps ensure these irreplaceable items are preserved and ready to inspire future generations.
By investing in conservation today, we honor the people and stories that built our nation. Together, we can ensure that these symbols of courage, leadership, and legacy continue to tell Galena’s—and America’s—story for centuries to come.
