Volunteer Opportunities

Special Events Volunteer
The Museum runs several special events throughout the year (Cemetery Walk, Grant Birthday Weekend, Home Tour, etc.) and you can help us ensure that these events are a success! (And if you enjoy wearing historical costumes, this is your chance to do it!) Duties vary from event to event, but may include selling tickets, serving food, acting as a guide, etc.

Museum Docent
Greet visitors as they explore the museum galleries and answer questions about Galena and the museum. A perfect position for someone who enjoys meeting new people, is familiar with our exhibits, and – of course – likes history!

Nuts and Bolts Volunteer
From exhibit installation to general maintenance, we’re always hammering, painting, and generally working hard to keep the Museum in tip-top shape. If you like working with your hands this is the position for you.

Old Blacksmith Shop Volunteer
Our Old Blacksmith Shop is looking for volunteers to help out, both as apprentice blacksmiths and gift shop assistants. Watch the sparks fly as our authentic 19th century blacksmith shop turns out handmade one-of-a-kind items. Open seasonally, May – October.

Curatorial Volunteer
Want to get up close and personal with history? Join our curatorial staff and volunteers and get a chance to work directly with the artifacts in our collection – this is the stuff that the average visitor never gets to see! All curatorial volunteers will receive training in how to work with objects, cataloging, and photography. Please contact the Museum at info@galenahistorymuseum.org or (815) 777-9129.
